Resolutions, Schmezolutions

For me, it feels very arbitrary to set goals on January first. I may have personal goals that are ongoing, but they have nothing to do with the calendar.  Most of my current goals have more to do with moving to a new home three years ago. It is hard to leave everything familiar behind and start over.

I am still working on meeting new people and making more friends in my new town. I have been making an effort to try new activities, such as singing in a choir, painting lessons, joining a book club, and learning pickleball. Then, if I meet someone who seems compatible, I try to initiate a closer contact by inviting them for a coffee. I have made some wonderful friendships this way, including some of you lovely readers.

I am also continuing to write. I am working on a science fiction / romance trilogy. I have finished the first book and have sent out a bunch of queries. I’ve received many rejections, which is par for the course, but I’m not giving up hope. If I don’t get a bite, I will self-publish later this year. I’m working on book two and have passed the halfway mark. I enjoy writing every morning. I is a wonderful creative outlet for me.

So, I hope you don’t feel any pressure to change your life this January. Here in Canada, it is more a time to hunker down and just get through each day until spring releases us from winter’s tight grip. I’m looking forward to longer sunlight hours and fewer layers of clothing. Until then, I’m still embracing the mini-white-light therapy in my home. Wishing you all good health and happiness in 2025.
