My Vaccine Conundrum

So this week I find myself, here in Vancouver, with a difficult choice to make. The government has just decided to make the AstraZeneca vaccine available immediately to my age group. Otherwise I can wait a month to get the Pfizer or Moderna shot through the government’s descending age roll-out, which would get to my age group in another month. So which do I choose?

The Astrazeneca only gives 63% protection, whereas both the Pfizer and Moderna offer over 90% efficacy. I want to be able to visit my mother-in-law in her care home and also, eventually, travel to the U.S. to see my daughter. I’m afraid that 63% is not convincing enough to make me feel safe.

My husband is of the opposite opinion. He thinks we should always take “a bird in the hand”, especially because I have two medical appointments in the next month and I have to drive him and another friend to the hospital for procedures. Otherwise I have gone nowhere except outside, not even grocery shopping, which we pre-order for parking lot pick-up. Haircuts can wait. We even hacked off each other’s hair in a drastic way a few months ago like animals.

So what would you do? I need advice on this. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
