Not a Peaceful Transfer of Power
This morning, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the black, female mayor of the District of Columbia calling for Trump to be charged and prosecuted for terrorism, after the attack on the Capitol building yesterday. Everyone seems to be calling for the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, which could include charging him with treason for inciting an insurrection. The Vice President, Mike Pence, would have to invoke the 25th Amendment with the support of the majority of Trump’s executive or the majority of Congress. Yesterday, Trump spurred on the crowd who, directly or indirectly, caused the death of four people, two women and two men. I say lock him in jail and throw away the key!
I never used to care about American politics, but now that my daughter is living in the states, I pay a lot more attention. Also, since I joined Twitter and have many followers in the U.S. so I feel a lot more connected to their daily lives. Watching them cope with the pandemic and the loss of loved ones has been sad and eye opening. They have to deal with so many injustices in their daily lives that we, here in Canada, already take for granted.
I am now wondering why the U.S. government is setting up bleachers outside the Whitehouse for Inauguration. They are limiting entrance to government members and press, plus one guest each, but shouldn’t the whole thing be done indoors to a virtual audience for safety at this point? They admitted today that the breach at the Capitol was a gross oversight in security preparation and they won’t be fooled again, but the pandemic should already prohibit any large gathering. I am worried about Mr. Biden and everyone else’s safety outside on that day. What if another angry mob shows up?
Last night, I read an interesting post on Twitter from a woman lawyer. She asked why the crowd of white insurrectionists was allowed to simply leave after they breached the Capitol building. She said one of her black clients received jail time for stealing a $2 candy bar. Good question. This morning they say that 68 people were arrested, but that is mostly after they herded them outside. Were the security agents simply outmanned? Or is this once again a clear double standard in how the police treat white vs. black people? Please share your thoughts.
