A Cure for Loneliness

During Covid, many people who live alone have been suffering from loneliness and depression. It had become a frequent topic of conversation on Twitter. People are extremely open nowadays about expressing their feelings, especially with safe Tweeps who are far away and not part of their daily lives. If there’s one thing that has become clear to me, it’s that pet adoption is a great option for these people on so may levels. Of course, it also gives a loving home to an animal in need.

I volunteer at our local cat shelter and it has been busier than usual with bookings to take a furry friend home. Whether you prefer cats or dogs, you can go to the SPCA or other local shelter websites to view the animals and read a description of their personality. This is important, because the folks at the shelter will tell you if their temperament doesn’t match your needs. For example, if you live in a small apartment and want a lap cat, then a feral barn dweller will not work. Neither will a big dog who needs to run every day, obviously. Every animal has little idiosyncrasies that the shelter will explain to you before you decide. If you cannot afford the usual payment to cover their initial vet’s bills, they may have gradual payment options, or you can foster the animal to see if it’s right for you first. Most shelters are not taking drop-in visitors during Covid, but you can book an appointment once you have narrowed it down to one or two pets that interest you.

Sharing your home with an animal will make you feel needed and occupy your time in positive ways that will lift your spirits. It has been proven that stroking a pet’s fur lowers stress levels and enhances mood. That’s why therapy dogs are brought into care homes. You will enjoy spending time feeding, cleaning, playing with and cuddling your new friend. They may even make a lovely sleeping companion as well. Talking to your pet does not mean you are nuts, it means you are normal.

So, if you are feeling blue due to the pandemic, I would encourage you to look into pet adoption. It will bring you joy for years to come. It may just be the best money you ever spent.
