Invasion of Ukraine

Last night was chilling for me watching the live feed of Russia rolling its military might along the borders of Ukraine and beginning to fire missiles. It was even more chilling to see him addressing his own Ministers and witnessing their visible fear to speak their minds in their own government chamber. This is clearly not a democracy.

Putin had been backing Russian militant rebels who live in the two eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk since 2014, when they self-proclaimed independence. There are 38% ethnic Russians living in this region who wish to go back to being a part of Russia. Coincidentally, this happened in the same year as Russia invaded Crimea and took it back as its own. It seems that Russia wants to control all the area around the Black Sea. Any countries that used to be part of the former U.S.S.R should be worried.

The only comparison I can think of would be our Quebec separatist movement here in Canada. It would as if France had rolled in and claimed Quebec as its own at the height of the separatist fervor, claiming to liberate Quebecers from the tyranny of the Canadian government. You can imagine how the rest of Canada would perceive this.

There are so many Ukrainian Canadians who fear for the safety of their loved ones back home right now. It must be terrifying for those in the eastern Ukraine who are now lined up in cars fleeing their homes. Putin seems to be targeting the capital of Kyiv as well. This is a very scary time indeed and it is surreal watching it unfold on live feeds. War is no longer a distant notion. We somehow expect developed countries to behave decently, but these power-hungry leaders continue to act with deplorable disregard for human life.
