I hate Fireworks!

This past weekend marked both the Canadian and American national celebrations of nationhood.  Most people look forward to these as an opportunity to visit family and friends for get outdoor picnics and barbecues. For me, I dread these celebrations because my cat is terrified, so I have to spend the night comforting her under a blanket. When I had a dog years ago, she ripped all the blinds off the windows and ran frenzied circles around the house until we realized she needed sedatives from the vet.

This year, I noticed a lot of discussion in social media about how people can’t go out and leave their pets unattended due to managing their fear. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a public holiday if many people are stuck at home with their animals. I understand that the kids love staying up light to see the light show, but is it really worth it?

There is also an environmental impact to consider. “A scientist told Forbes that when the fireworks go off, the metal salts and explosives undergo a chemical reaction that releases smoke and gases into the air. That includes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen—three greenhouse gases that are unfortunately responsible for climate change.”

Furthermore, it’s not just our pets who are traumatized. Wild animals are also terrified by the loud noise that sounds like gunfire. Local forest animals might behave erratically, such as running onto a highway in fright. “There are documented cases of loud fireworks causing ground nesting birds to abandon their nests and flightless chicks to be permanently separated from their parents during the confusion, resulting in death.”
